goprohero4session 01

It all began way back over a decade ago when one man by the name of Nick Woodman started a company called GoPro, a company which is now known to the world to be valued more than 3 billion dollars today. Many in the world today own amazing cameras manufactured by this amazing company and just when you thought that things could not get any better, it just did. After a decade of research, the company has finally launched one of the most powerful, smallest action camera in the world today. The action camera is best known to those who normally capture videos of extreme and intense situations such as skydivers, snowboarders, cyclists and even surfers. Daredevils who love recording videos of themselves have now got a new toy in the market for them to test out and play with. The GoPro Hero 4 Session, an action camera that is said to be the smallest and the lightest among all the other GoPro action cameras ever manufactured up to date.

Breaking It Down

Compared to all its other sibling, the GoPro Hero 4 Session has a much more detailed cube-shaped body as opposed to the Hero4 Silver and Black and it is even close to less the weight of what the other GoPro’s weigh. The mounting frame works on this beauty right were allow you to rotate the camera around and this is not something which you can actually pull off so easily with all the previous models of GoPro action cameras.

Another huge plus point for this cameras right here is that it is waterproof all the way down to 10 meters without you having to put an enclosure over it. Try comparing this amazing camera right here to the other action cameras in the market and you will realize that all the cameras out there would require you to put a wraparound housing just to keep them dry.

That is not all that there is to be said about this compact action camera as its rugged design compliments its capability of capturing images and recording videos at a very intense level with such clarity. Just as it has been named, the GoPro Hero 4 Session is one which you will take to shoot at racing sessions, skiing or even snowboarding sessions perhaps without having to worry much about how you are going to capture the images.

The Design

Being someone who captures crazy moments in extreme situations, you would want to have the best of both worlds and that is to have perfect image quality along with perfect sound quality as well. With the GoPro Hero 4 Session, you can do just that, even when you are underwater. All other actions cameras out there require you to use a housing to protect the camera from damages or getting wet and that alone hinders the audio quality but guess what, not to the GoPro Hero 4 Session. Compared to all its other siblings which only have one mounting point at the bottom, the Session on the other hand uses its cube-like shape as an advantage, allowing you to attach the frames mount to the bottom, top or even to the side depending on where you want it. You can even choose to mount it upside down and it still would not be a problem as your video will be flipped 180 degrees by the camera itself when you start recording.

This little action camera comes with two frames. One frame has that normal GoPro two-prong mount on the bottom and the other frame is the one that helps you mount the back. The special feature here would be a quick-release buckle which enabled you to position your Hero 4 Session in places where you would have thought impossible such as under your skateboard or to your belt buckle while you are bungee jumping. Just to make it a little bit more interesting, GoPro has added an additional ball joint with the buckle so that you can tilt the camera up or down.

This just goes to show that size does matter and the smaller gadgets do have their own string points. Despite all that has been said, there are a couple of things that have been sacrificed when creating this amazing little device. Due to the GoPro Hero 4 Session’s small size, there wasn’t enough space for placing a Micro-HDMI output and the battery had to be built within the camera. Don’t fret just yet as there is a Micro-USB port which you can use for transferring files and for charging as well.

Getting Into Action

You will only find two buttons on this camera and all you need to do to get started is to give a quick press to the button at the top and in less than 5 seconds, the camera will start recording already. If you were to push and hold the button when the camera is turned off, for about 3 seconds, then you will be able to use the camera to take time-lapse photos. Give it a final quick press and you will shut it down.

The second button is one you will find at the back. A quick press on this button lets you know essential information about the number of recordings you have, your battery life and also your video resolution. Press this button for the second time and you will activate the camera’s Wi-Fi which can be now used to connect an Android or iOS device.

The Camera

The GoPro Hero 4 Session has maintained its standards by still being able to catch GoPro quality 1080p60, 720p100 and 1440p30 video with 8MP photos in different modes. Although the device has a recording resolution of 1080p at 30 frames per second by default, you can in-fact change its settings and get it to record up to 1,920×1,440 at 30fps, 1,920×1,080 at 60fps and 1,280×720 at 100fps and these are just some of the few options which you could choose from. It can be a little frustrating changing between resolution settings so most people just set one particular resolution setting and stick to it.

Video Quality

As far as the video quality is concerned, you would not be upset as the GoPro Hero 4 Session’s 1080p at 60fps recording capability gives you clear and detailed images in your videos. Things might be different if you were to shoot videos in places with dim lights so don’t keep your hopes too high and expect to get the same results as you would when you take pictures  or videos with great background lighting.

Stardard and Surf version of Gopro Hero 4 Session starts from a whopping $399.99. This translates to around RM 1,700 in Malaysia.
