Oculus Rift – Everything You Need To Know About It
Have you ever imagined using a helmet like gadget over your head and entering a virtual world which you could have never imagined otherwise? Doesn’t this sound a little too good to be true? Think again because it actually is true. You can now, shoot, run, and even fly around in the game itself with this unbelievable gadget called the Oculus Rift. Thanks to a new start-up called the Oculus VR, the world will soon have access to a virtual reality googles which will allow them to change the way how games have been played in the past.
What is it and how does it work?
The Oculus Rift is simply a set of virtual reality goggles that will work with your computer or even your mobile device. While the world may think that this is something new, a prototype of this device was actually showed at the gaming convention back in 2012. The two main names behind this revolutionary gadget, Palmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe who is now the current CEO of the company actually had this idea launched through Kickstarter back in August 2012 and they managed to raise a crazy 2.4 million USD. What makes this even more exciting is that early last year on the 24th of March 2014, the company Oculus VR was purchased by the largest social network in the world, Facebook for 2 billion USD.
To make things easy to understand, just imagine yourself wearing a set of ski goggles with two large screens as those on a cell phone as your front glass. You will be seeing two images that will be side by side as each eye has its own display screen. The science behind this is relatively simple as what you have is a couple of lenses which is placed on the screen that is aimed to reshape the image for each eye while creating a stereoscopic 3D image at the same time. The images seen through these goggles are adjusted accordingly by the embedded sensors that are built into this device. There will be an external positional-tracking accessory in the newer versions on the Oculus Rift which will enable movements to be tracked more accurately. What you will experience from this whole thing here is that you will get that feeling that you are in fact walking and looking around in a whole new 3D world.
Is it safe to use?
It had been said that a few of them who have tried the prototype model of the Oculus Rift did experience having a headache right after using it. It is true that this could happen when first time users test a demo version of this as conventions as the Oculus Rift’s settings are not customized to that particular person. In most cases, it could also take your body some time to adjust to the surroundings of this virtual reality experience. Some others have even complained saying that they get nauseated after using this gadget as their brains and body are actually tricked into believing that they are actually moving around when they aren’t.
Where to get it and how much does it cost?
Those who are interested will need to go to their official website and make the pre-orders now. All orders will only start shipping in July. The price for the Oculus Rift has not yet been fixed but tech analyst have made an assumption that it would cost somewhere around RM 1800 (USD 499) but no one really knows for sure until the device is officially launched.
Will the Oculus Rift change anything?
Yes, in fact it will change everything in the gaming world. People in the world today will finally get that opportunity to experience 3D gaming in real life. Who knows, people might one day be able to experience so many other ‘out of this world’ experiences and this could very well be the next big thing in society.
