Look up for a new smartphone from Xiaomi which had been recently launched in August 2015 namely the Redmi Note 2. The cheap and powerful phone that resembles Apple in term of appearance and performance at a fair price has already catches a lot of attention from several top-notch smartphone companies including Apple itself due to the excellent user experience provided by the company. Whether the phone could compete with its predecessor can only be answered when we take a look at it.
Design & Display
The device is kept simple with 5.5-inch IPS LCD touchscreen display that brings out the resolution of 1080 pixels and a 400ppi. Thus, it gives out the sharp and excellent viewing angles to the viewers who like to watch the media including watching video, web browsing and reading. Its bodies share the similarities with the Mi 4i which has the soft plastic cover with a matte finish on its rear. In addition, the cover can be removed to give an access to the dual micro-SIM card slots, microSD card slot, and the battery which is not included for the Mi 4i cover.
The power button and the volume rocker can be found on the right side of the device while the microUSB port and the headphone jack on top and bottom of it. The device also features the capacitive navigation keys in a red illuminated colour and an IR blaster. Consumers can feel a better handling experience with its significantly lighter and thinner unit-body while its matte finish add up a better grips as well on its rear.
The performance of the device is on top quality as it is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor which is equivalent to the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810, where it clocking at 2GHz to 2.2GHz and it is backed with 2GB of RAM alongside PowerVR G6200 GPU. The processing package of the device has been slightly improves compare to its predecessor which is excellent and it could handles multi-tasking very well but it lacks the power unit to make the Redmi Note 2 as a gaming devices.
There are two versions of Redmi Note 2 are being sold in the market which is the 16GB and 32GB of internal storage that can be expanded by using a microSD card. It also comes with a wide range of connectivity including 3G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth, GPS, FM, and Wi-Fi. The device which is actually a dual SIM smartphone could support two of the Micro-SIMs and the device is backed by a 3060mAh battery. Although, the battery life is having a quite short duration to stay for at least 12 hours when an app is used by consumers intensively for a consider amount of time, it is removable and consumers could bring a spare to change their battery. Nevertheless, the device is still lacking the fast charging capability.
The Redmi Note 2 is packed with a 13MP LED flash camera on its rear and a 5MP front-shooter for consumers to take selfies. The camera application of the device has several modes such as Panorama, Beauty and Smart mode as well a manual mode for a better picture’s quality. Both front and rear camera can record a 720p and 1080p video respectively.
Currently, the device used the MIUI 6 together with Android Lollipop, but soon it will receive an official update of the user interface to MIUI 7. The colourful MIUI interface is a little bit different than a stock android but it allows the consumers to reorganize the quick toggles, customize the information in the status bar, adjust the brightness when it is on, and change the colour display of contrast and temperature.
There are various robust theme in the store is available for consumers to change the device feel and look as well as functions of the capacitive keys. On the other hands, there are several pre-installed application can be found inside the device such as Xiaomi Backup and the Mi Sound Enhancer app. A little bit of disarray as the device did not support the Google Apps.
The price of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is RM 649. Only white and dark grey is available in Malaysia.
The Redmi Note 2 is a smartphone that has a great value of money for most budget buyers. Possibly not one of the great phone out there but it still offers a powerful performance inside a good-looking device with fantastic camera and a great screen.
